Fit testing
Respirator Fit Testing
Respirator fit testing checks whether a tight-fitting respirator forms an effective seal on a person’s face. This helps ensure the respirator can provide the expected level of protection while working around airborne hazards such as dust, fumes, or aerosols.
Fit testing is required when workers use tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment (RPE) as part of their role.
What is qualitative fit testing?
Qualitative fit testing is a pass/fail test that relies on the wearer’s ability to detect a test agent (taste or smell) while wearing their respirator.
If the test agent can be detected, this indicates the respirator seal may not be adequate and the respirator may not be providing full protection.
When is fit testing required?
Fit testing is required when a worker is required to wear a tight-fitting respirator to protect them from airborne contaminants such as dust, fumes, vapours, or aerosols.
Fit testing should be completed:
Before a worker first uses a tight-fitting respirator
When a different make, model, or size of respirator is used
If there are changes to the worker’s face or body that could affect the seal (for example weight change, dental work, facial surgery, or facial hair)
At regular intervals, as part of ongoing respiratory protection management
Fit testing helps confirm that the selected respirator is suitable for the individual and can provide the intended level of protection when worn correctly.
What to bring
Please bring:
The respirator(s) you use at work (if provided by your workplace)
If you do not have a respirator, we can fit and supply one (additional charges apply)
Any required PPE that may affect fit, if applicable
Before your test
For accurate results, please:
Avoid eating, drinking (except water), smoking, or chewing gum for 15 minutes before the test
Let the tester know if you are unwell, congested, or have breathing difficulties on the day
Important: facial hair
Tight-fitting respirators require a clean seal against the skin to achieve a valid fit test result.
If there is facial hair in the seal area (for example, heavy beard or thick stubble), we will be unable to complete the fit test, as the result would not be valid.
If a worker chooses not to shave, Engage Safety will provide the employer with documentation confirming:
The worker was given the opportunity to complete fit testing, and
The fit test could not be completed due to facial hair affecting the respirator seal
This is a safety and validity requirement, not a personal judgement.
What happens during the test
Step 1: Respirator check and positioning
The tester will confirm the respirator type and size, show you how to correctly put it on, and ask you to complete a user seal check.
Step 2: Sensitivity check
Before the fit test begins, you will complete a short sensitivity check to confirm you can detect the test agent (taste or smell).
Step 3: Fit test exercises
While wearing the respirator and a test hood, you will complete a series of simple movements (such as normal breathing, deep breathing, and turning your head). This confirms the respirator maintains a seal during typical work activity.
Results
Qualitative fit testing provides a pass or fail result.
Pass: The test is completed without detecting the test agent, confirming the respirator fits correctly at the time of testing.
Fail: The test is stopped if the test agent is detected. The respirator may be readjusted and the test repeated. A second failure may indicate a different size or model is required.
How long does it take?
Most fit tests take approximately 15–20 minutes per person, depending on the respirator type and whether multiple masks are being tested.
After your fit test
To stay protected at work:
Always wear the respirator exactly as tested
Complete a seal check each time you put it on
Replace damaged or worn respirators as required
Report any fit issues to your supervisor
Change filters as required
Important reminder
Fit testing confirms the respirator fit at the time of testing only.
Gain or lose weight
Have dental or facial changes
Grow facial hair
Change respirator type or model
