Drug Testing

Drug Testing

Workplace drug testing helps identify whether substances are present at levels that may affect a person’s ability to work safely. This includes illegal drugs, as well as prescription or over-the-counter medications if they could cause impairment.

Testing supports safe workplaces by helping ensure workers can:

  • Make clear decisions.

  • Operate machinery or vehicles safely.

  • Stay alert and coordinated.

  • Respond quickly to unexpected situations

Drug and alcohol testing is about keeping everyone safe at work. It is not about singling people out or judging what they do outside of work.

Where testing can be completed

We can complete testing:

  • Onsite using our mobile testing service

  • At a clinic

All testing is carried out respectfully and professionally by trained and NZQA qualified Engage Safety staff, following recognized New Zealand best practice.

How long does it take?

Most tests take around 10–15 minutes per person.

This can vary slightly depending on the individual and how long it takes to provide a sample.

Types of workplace testing

Depending on your workplace policy, testing may include:

  • Pre-employment testing

  • Random testing

  • Post-incident / post-accident testing

  • Reasonable cause testing (when there are safety concerns)

  • Return-to-work testing

What to bring

Please bring valid legal photo identification, such as:

  • Driver license

  • Passport

  • Another government-issued photo ID

This helps confirm your identity and ensures the testing process is fair and accurate.

How the testing process works

  1. ID is checked to confirm identity

  2. The test is explained and consent is confirmed

  3. A sample is collected following best practice procedures

  4. Screening results are recorded

  5. If required, non-negative results are sent to an accredited laboratory for confirmation

  6. Results are reported confidentially to authorized parties

Understanding your results

Results may be:

Negative
No drugs were detected in the sample.

Non-negative
A substance was detected in the initial screening test. A non-negative result does not automatically mean a confirmed positive result. The sample will be sent to an accredited laboratory for confirmation and to determine the level present.

What substances are tested for and what is the cut off level?

Drug testing may include:

  • Cannabis (THC) (50 µg/L)

  • Opiates (300 µg/L)

  • Amphetamines (300 µg/L)

  • Methamphetamines (300 µg/L)

  • Benzodiazepines (200 µg/L)

  • Cocaine (300 µg/L).

Confidentiality

All results are handled confidentially and shared only with authorized people, in line with privacy and employment laws.
